Sarah Fagan
Sarah Fagan
Who are you? Sarah Fagan. Currently winemaker for De Bortoli Wines in the Yarra Valley. If you weren't a winemaker what would you be? I would have liked to have been a professional skier. What would you say to your kid if they wanted to be a winemaker? Got a few years up my sleeve before I have to think about that one. Maybe, 'chin up sunshine, you'll think of something else to do'. What does it take to be a good winemaker? Still learning, but hard work and attention to detail would be high on the list. What's your favourite law to break? Getting home in good time, in a turbo diesel is always good fun. Where would you like to make wine where you haven't already? The Mosel in Germany, Burgundy in France and Piedmonte in Italy. Straightforward answer, but classic & hugely inspiring places. When did you move out of home? When I was 11, off to boarding school in Sydney. What makes a great wine? A great wine is a rare thing. In my experience, it should be something which intrigues you and makes you think about it long after the bottle/glass is finished. It should also be a pure expression of where it has come from, both in site and season. Got any good advice? If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck. Trust your instincts. Star Trek or Star Wars? Star Wars by a mile.
